Costner released a statement celebrating the release of An American Saga at the prestigious French-based festival. “I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon, an American Saga in this year’s selection,” Costner said. “It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come. Horizon, an American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film…”

A long-standing passion project for Costner, An American Saga was first commissioned in 1988, with the Academy Award-winning director initially approaching Disney with the idea in 2003. A statement from the Cannes Film Festival describes the movie as a “monumental project about the cost, in terms of war and violence, of the construction and expansion of the United States of America,” with the film being set during the American Civil War.

The first official trailer for An American Saga was released this past February. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Avatar franchise star Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Sienna Miller, Thomas Haden Church and Giovanni Ribisi. Costner co-wrote the screenplay for An American Saga alongside Jon Baird, with principal photography for Chapter 1 concluding in 2022, while Chapter 2 filming wrapped last May.

Kevin Costner Hopes for Four Chapters
Costner plans a four-part film series with An American Saga, with production on the third film suspended due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. An American Saga comes on the back of his Golden Globe-winning success portraying John Dutton in Yellowstone. Costner has been at odds with Yellowstone, leaving the series during Season 5 following creative differences and a pay dispute. However, recent reports suggest Costner is having a change of heart and could feature during Season 5, Part 2, the final stretch of the acclaimed Yellowstone series.

Chapter 1 of An American Saga opens in theaters on Jun. 28, while Chapter 2 debuts on Aug. 16.
